Topic: downtime resolved

Hi there Deviants.

youtube.com/watch?v=SOVAYyYt_VI

OSSEC logs (30GB!) filled up our /var partition, which as you can guess caused quite a bit of problems for the system overall

Things are back to normal, sorry! Enjoy the YouTube video!

Re: downtime resolved

Glad you're back up!  smile

Re: downtime resolved

I'm glad that wolfman is now "just fine" and thanks for sharing the song!

Re: downtime resolved

I'm curious what happen today? smile  I noticed that devio.us was responding to pings, but wasn't allowing connections today. smile

Re: downtime resolved

Please consider posting downtime notices to the wolfman Twitter feed, Facebook page, or something similarly available when the wolfman is not?

I understand wolfman is somewhat of an experiment. Even as a paying customer I am willing to deal with the outages in exchange for the conveniences I receive from an account on wolfman.

However, I request that acknowledgment of downtime be posted by one of the admins to a publicly available space. Estimated time of repair would be nice but, really, I just want to know that someone is aware of and working to resolve any issues.

Re: downtime resolved

We do have an IRC channel on chat.us.freenode.net #devious . The IRC channel knew what was going on. Many people idle but quite a few enjoy participating in discussion around the clock. If you do not have an irc client (wth not?) freenode has a web based client here: http://webchat.freenode.net/.

Re: downtime resolved

That is perfect. Thank you cook.

Re: downtime resolved

I like the idea of twitter (the IRC is time consuming tongue) . Updates in twitter like "Downtime caused by logs of IDS. ETA: unknown" and "Problems resolved. All works again." are perfect.

If all the team needs to access to account @wolfman you can use cotweet.

Re: downtime resolved

That's right cook. The IRC channel is pretty active around the clock (there are quiet periods), but it's your very best bet at getting ahold of someone responsible in times like this (otherwise, the admins@ email address is best). Feel free to pop in to chat if you have any questions, or just want to chill - we're a friendly bunch, and don't usually bite.

I should probably post more... But I'm never in the forums.
Try the IRC channel - it's delicious!

Re: downtime resolved

I wish I could access IRC, although part of the reason for connecting to devio.us is having an SSL connection that won't get filtered by the firewall. smile  I couldn't telnet to other sites because of filtering, so using an SSL connection to a remote site wasn't blocked and allowed me to use such services.

I did note that the website was not responding, unlike the other time when things were down, like no DNS entry for the world for a few hours.

I do agree a twitter or some other alternate means might be helpful, as some things get blocked on the firewall at work to prevent me from doing anything else short of just refreshing a webpage.

Re: downtime resolved

We do have a twitter but it's not regularly updated

I think this is fair to request, and I think usually we've done a decent job at getting it back online. However I'm not sure it's unfair to ask for a little understanding from the community - I think all of the 5 admins have a full time job and none of us make any money off of this project. We'd love to give wolfman the 24/7 attention and care he deserves, but it's just not possible, especially since this idea was spawned from a passion of what we love doing.

So to hopefully get notices out quicker (hint: I'M LISTENING TO FEEDBACK smile, I'll go ahead and give all the admins twitter access. That should serve as the secondary outlet of news in case we go down again and zeeby and I aren't lurking.

With that said, anyone want to submit a pseudo resume to write some php code for devio.us? This has nothing to do with anything in the above paragraphs.

Oh, not expecting you to jump right on it. smile  Just when you can't see what is going on, your mind begins to go, "OMG...  NO!!!!" smile
