Topic: Along came a shell provider...

If you ask me, I'd say it's been a long time.

Overlooking the past 10 years, shell providers have come and gone. One after another, some teenage boy decides that he will run a sweet shell provider off of his Slackware installation. Months pass, summer time spent in his bedroom trying to figure out how 'ulimit' works, while his users are complaining. School begins, the project suffers and sooner or later, a domain squatter squeezes in. Users are long gone, user data overwritten by a cracked Windows XP install to run the latest 3D game. Project is pronounced dead, while really, the project was dead all along.

Yeah, this all sounds way too familiar. Well, we're here to change some things up.

Devio.us is a brand new free UNIX shell provider, with slightly different goals, slightly different attitude and a totally different outlook on this whole sub-genre of internet services.

Our goal here is to provide you with a secure and most importantly stable environment, that won't disappear in a year or two. We have gone to great lengths to make sure that the systems you access are reliable, fully backed up and have great connectivity. While everyone can sign up, not everyone will get an account, but those who do, will be rewarded greatly. A place ran by experienced sysadmins who actually do this sort of thing for a living.

We invite all IT enthusiasts - sysadmins, netadmins, developers etc. to come join us on this ride.

Raise the flag and say hello to Devio.us and Wolfman.

P.S. Go sign up!

Re: Along came a shell provider...

I've been wanting to do something like this for years but never had the right data center to host it in (i.e. one open to the internet).

Good on you for making it happen!
