Topic: A Devio.us facelift
Dear deviants, fellow OpenBSD junkies and wolfman fans,
Over the next several weeks, Devio.us is going to be receiving a major facelift. While we'd love to unveil all of the changes at once, this is probably not going to be possible, as there is quite a lot to do. Without much additional fluff, here is a rough list of everything that is incoming:
1. All existing regular and premium users will be migrated to two new Sun X4100 servers (both amd64)
2. The 'wolfman' server is going to be re-deployed as a backend storage server.
3. We are completely revamping our auth system in order to have a centralized means to manage users between all servers.
4. Mail, MySQL (and PgSQL) will be moved to the backend storage server.
5. A new 'vote' based registration system will be tied into our IRC channel - giving IRC users the ability to approve/deny new registrations.
6. A full site re-design
7. No more tunneled IPv6 - we are going native IPv6!
8. Full domain hosting for premium users (mail administration access included).
9. A possible Sparc64 server for cross-platform testing/programming/port maint.
10. And lastly, we are planning on providing the lower East coast with an OpenBSD mirror!
Naturally, there's quite a lot more stuff going on behind the scenes. Most of these changes require a serious amount of manpower and time and we will do our best to complete all of the above in a timely manner.
During this major transition, there might be some temporary outages (such as the need to take down 'wolfman'), however we will make sure to announce these well prior to the maintenances. We will also be posting some pictures of our new, sexy setup :-)
If you have any questions or want some more in-depth info - feel free to post some comments.
P.S. Before we forget - a major thank you to all of those folks who supported and promoted our sister project - Tunnelr. The service has been running wonderfully with a lot of positive feedback. Wolfman loves you.
