Topic: New features, software and security updates!

Hello deviants and soon-to-be-deviants.

We have a massive slew of updates to go over. We've implemented a ton of new features and are continuing work on bettering your shell experience.

So from the top down, here we go.

1. We have implemented suPHP for all accounts.

We realize that there are quite a few of you who would like to run blogs/forums/etc. on your web space, however, prior to suPHP, this was probably a bad idea, considering anyone could cat your 'wp-config.php' file and grab your database details. suPHP fixes this problem, as your PHP scripts will now be executed with the owner and group that the file has. In other words, you may now safely 'chmod 600 yourfile.php' and know that no one else is able to snoop on it. Read more about suPHP here .

2. We have implemented per-user login classes.

Login classes are an amazing feature in *BSD. They enable admins to preset the amount of resources a user or a group of users can take up on the system, anything ranging from memory, processes to cpu time and set some other values such as custom motd's.

Prior to this, we used to bundle all users into one default login class. While this approach is quite fine, some users have different demands and might require a higher maxproc or datasize setting. Additionally, for those of you who are misbehaving, we can quickly add a custom motd that is just meant for you smile

3. Kayla has finished designing our first official Devio.us t-shirt.

Go and check it out on the forum and comment. We are going to be placing a large order within the next couple of days, so if there is something you want changed, let your voice be heard now.

4. Internal automation stuff.

With the help of 'blue' and 'jared', we've finished writing our entire user management UI. While most of you will never see this, it still inadvertently affects you, as it allows us to manage our systems in a much quicker fashion.

Here's a cool screenshot of our UI for those interested.

5. Trusted SSL certificates.

Do you not like seeing the 'This site is using a self-signed SSL certificate' notices? We don't like them either, so we went ahead and purchased proper SSL's and have it enabled for all services that utilize SSL. Specifically, https, pop3s/imaps and smtp. Please note that some mail clients will automatically choose to use 'mail.devio.us' and 'smtp.devio.us' for pop3/imap and outbound smtp. Using those is fine, however you will receive warnings that the SSL cert is not meant for those hostnames. To alleviate this, change both of the suggested hostnames to simply 'devio.us' and you shouldn't have any further notices.

There's quite a few other things as usual - more software has been installed, we're also starting some small plans for organizing a possible netris (or dopewars) tournament, in which we'll give out either a premium account and/or a t-shirt. But this shall be saved for the next update.
